Ohio History Center - Civil War Reenactment 2014

The Ohio History Center was the location of a US Civil War reenactment this June at the Ohio Village area.

The village was sectioned off into 2 camps, one for those representing the Union soldiers and the other section housed the Confederate soldiers.

As with most of the reenactment events, most of the day, you wander about the grounds and learn from the reenactors there about the time period and the lives the soldiers led.





Specific times allow for expertly choreographed battles that include various types of cannon, cavalry and infantry skirmishes with varying maneuvers.






You can learn quite a bit just by watching these battle sequences to see how warfare was conducted back in the 1860's.

These types of events can be very immersive and the Ohio Village is a perfect backdrop to this event.

Remembering Holocaust Survivors and the Ohioans That Liberated Them - A Memorial

Governor John Kasich proposed a memorial to remember Holocaust Survivors and Ohio World War 2 veterans that liberated them.

After a 3 year undertaking, starting in May 2011, the memorial was "given life" in March 2012 when legislation was signed by the Governor and put the project under the management of the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board and the Ohio Arts Council.  The memorial was designed by Daniel Libeskind.

Dedication ceremonies were held on June 2, 2014.

The memorial can be found between the entrance of the Ohio Theater and South Plaza of the Ohio Statehouse.

Heart of Africa At The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has been around for a long time.  Under the guidance of Jack Hanna, it has grown to be the #1 rated zoo in the United States.

The Heart of Africa wing follows in the same great tradition as Asia Quest in that it brings a whole new life to the already great zoo.  Upon entering the new area, you are slowly brought into the Africa feel.  The whole section kind of has a "town" feel to it, like you are not just entering another area of the zoo, but you have been transported to Africa.

The architecture and layout immerse you.  Now that you feel like you've been transported to a whole other place, you walk along an elevated boardwalk and gaze our upon an Africa plain.  Home to such wonderful animals like gazelle, ostrich, zebra and giraffes.  All roaming in a large habitat.

The lions had their own separate area, as did the warthogs.

The elevated platform allows for giraffe feeding at specific times during the day for a small fee.

In my opinion, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has hit another home run with this new opening.  Everyone I saw there was having a great time.  The animals looked comfortable and content in the spacious areas they were given to roam.

I can see this being a repeat visit for me and the family, we loved it that much.
