Background:

A 2-Day arts festival organized by the Franklinton Arts District.  It has been an annual event since 2007, featuring art murals from over 60 local artists.  This is one of central Ohio's largest urban renewal projects.

Impression:

Music, food trucks and art done on site.  If you are looking for a fun weekend, definitely give Urban Scrawl's annual event a look see.

Artists embrace their favorite medium of choice and use large wooden boards to showcase their talents.  This year, we notices the same great variation in styles...but we also were treated to quite a few more three dimensional pieces that jumped off the board.

You have everything you need in one place.  Something to entertain you - the music and the art, you have food and drinks - food trucks and beer.

We were able to bring some new eyes to this event this year.   We had some friends who had never been before and we invited them.   They loved the variety and techniques that artists employed.

Since this is an annual event for us, we were fortunate to see some familiar faces and old friends.

It was great to see the first timers taking it all in.    Speaking of first timers, we invited some friends of ours to partake of the event for their first time.    It was exciting to see their reactions to all the different art styles and techniques.

Citizen Jane Movie Screening

Our professional photography service, Best Light Photographic, was recently hired to cover a local event at the Gateway Film Center on High Street in Columbus.  The Center for Architecture and Design (CFAD) was having a documentary screening and a panel Q&A.    There was an interesting by product of this event for me that I wanted to share.

Going into the event, I had very little practical knowledge of architecture.  I had a general idea of what an architect does, being designing buildings and spaces.  My only real exposure was Ted Moseby's character in the TV show, How I Met Your Mother!

The event consisted of 2 documentary films.  One was about Franklinton and the North Market in Columbus, OH, the second was called Citizen Jane which outlined the urban renewal efforts of NYC's past.

What this event and these documentaries gave me was a sense of perspective.  Not of what an architect does, but a lot more of the why they do what they do and why they design the way they do.

I never took the time before to think about the socio-economic impact of architecture.  Not only must buildings and spaces be beautiful and functional, consideration must be placed on how the building/space will affect or mold the neighborhood.

Money can be saved by using existing structures as a base instead of bulldozing and building new.  When building new, do you spend more on a more durable structure that takes longer to build and has a higher up front cost or do you need the building up quickly and under a tight budget?

Consideration on how the building space will be utilized and the surrounding space will be accessed all need to be included.

The event taught me a lot about urban revival and the consequences that need to be considered during every new build and every renovation.

I want to take the time to thank Tim Lai of Lai Architecture as well as CFAD for the opportunity to work for them, but also for the fabulous educational moment.

Independents Day 2015

Background:
Held in the Franklinton area in downtown Columbus, this festival has 7 stages for music performances, vendors tents and art exhibits and performance art.
The feature here is independent artist and performers having a showcase to show you what they have to offer.

Impression:
If you've not been to this festival before you are missing out.  At first look, I thought it might be the same as Urban Scrawl, which we had just recently featured here at Visual Ohio.  It is not the same however.

Dayton local band Good English.

There is a stronger emphasis on music and performing arts.  There are tents and stages in every nook and cranny of the Franklinton area.   Make sure to investigate them all.

A fun place for all ages of family members.  Definitely, this festival needs more exposure and participation by the community.

Urban Scrawl 2015

Background:
A 2-Day arts festival organized by the Franklinton Arts District.  It has been an annual event since 2007, featuring art murals from over 60 local artists.  This is on of central Ohio's largest urban renewal projects.

Impression:
I was so amazed at the abundance of talent.  As I walked through the displays, I really could not pick a favorite.   From abstract to mixed media, there was something for everyone.  Visitors could stand and observe as artists made their visions come to life.  Food trucks, a bar, and even a skate park were available.  There were families and dogs and a real feel of community.  My only regret is we didn't attend previous years!
